Recreation and Entertainment

The mild climate of the Piedmont lets you live the outdoor life in any season.  Boating and water sports of all kinds are available at the Cane Creek Reservoir, 2 miles from The Duchy.

The Atlantic Ocean and the Great Smoky Mountains are within a day’s drive. Closer to home you can stroll through Duke Gardens, get up close and personal with the animals at the North Carolina Zoo and feel your heart pound at the North Carolina Speedway. And let’s not forget golf! North Carolina is blessed with many beautiful courses catering to all levels of expertise. And when you’re in the mood for a night of fun and laughs, catch the wizards of improvisation at Indecision Theater.

Sports

For you sports fans, college and professional athletics abound in the Triangle area.  The 2006 Stanley Cup winner is our own Carolina Hurricanes, whose home rink is in Raleigh. The Tarheels, the Blue Devils, and the Wolfpack provide national title-winning action within 1 hour of The Duchy.  The NFL’s Carolina Panthers, and the NBA’s Carolina Bobcats are less than 2 1/2 hours away in Charlotte, NC.

Higher Education

Local colleges in the area offer prime opportunities for education. The University of North Carolina, Duke University, North Carolina State University, Meredith College, and Peace College all have world-wide reputations for excellence in their fields.

Culture

Cultural institutions in the Triangle are world-class.  You can delight in the beautiful sounds of the Raleigh Symphony, and the beautiful sights at the Ackland Art Gallery. If history intrigues you, you can visit the Alamance County Battleground, a pre-Revolutionary War site.  For the science buff, The NC Museum of Life and Science is packed with highly interactive exhibits, including a butterfly house and an insectarium. And don’t forget the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, where you can experience dazzling multi-media star shows.

Medical Facilities

In the Triangle area we are fortunate to have access to excellent health care as a result of the collaboration between our hospitals and our universities.  Both Duke University Medical Center and UNC Health Care are affiliated with their respective universities, thus linking the newest research in medicine to the newest treatments for patients.

Research Triangle Park

Created in 1959, the Research Triangle Park (RTP) is the most successful planned research park in the United States.  131 organizations are located in the Triangle Park, and about half of the employees there work for multinational Corporations.  R&D and IT related firms account for more than 90% usage of the Park (including such companies as IBM, GlaxoSmithKline, Cisco, Nortel, and the U.S. EPA).
